The Austin Wind Symphony

If you love the music of film and television, the Austin Wind Symphony has got you covered!  Founded in June of 2005, the fifty piece 501(c) 3 volunteer organization believes that today’s classical music is usually only a movie ticket away!

“This is music that is so often underappreciated.  The composer’s role is to bring the elements of the project together, only to have it buried in sound effects, and dialogue; We exist to prove just how powerful it can be when heard live.” said Patrick Phillips, founder and conductor of the ensemble.

Episode 3 of “Prelude to a Concert” reality series released!

October 17, 2009

Austin Wind Symphony – Prelude to a Concert – Season 1: Episode 3: Winds of Change

When the ensemble learns that their friend, and vice president, Shelly Eager has come down with a bad case of the Swine Flu, Conductor Patrick Phillips asks each of the band’s members to sign a card wishing her well. Meanwhile a massive change in venue is decided upon, in order to save money, and expand into the Austin Community. The symphony rehearses music from “The Little Mermaid”, where the conductor reminds them that performing film music requires research, and should not be like performing the part of “Oliver Twist” with the voice of comedian Jeff Foxworthy.

The Austin Wind Symphony – Boldly Going… Again.

April 27, 2009

startrekmain

On May 8th, 2009 @ 8pm The Austin Wind Symphony will fill the air with the triumphant sounds of the Final Frontier.  The “Star Trek” event, scheduled that evening on the plaza of the Bob Bullock History Museum/IMAX Theater will feature  the 40 piece volunteer ensemble performing music from the iconic series, and films.

“I am excited to be conducting the music once again, this time for an audience of trekkers/trekkies who will hang on our every note!” said Patrick Phillips, the symphony’s conductor.  “It gives me a sense of pride knowing that this music continues to live on in the hearts and souls of  fans all around the world.”  Phillips, a well known composer of Trek Fan-films (Star Trek: New Voyages, Starship Farragut) founded the Austin Wind Symphony in June 2005, which is now known as “Austin’s VERY OWN Cinematic Symphony” as the ensemble is dedicated to the sole performance of the music from film and television in each of it’s concerts.

This will be the groups second “Trek” into space, as they successfully performed a themed “Star Trek” concert last October with a special video intro from George Takei,  a fully costumed symphony, and a flurry of “Websclusive” audio interviews with Star Trek composers Gerald Fried (Amok Time), and Ron Jones (STTNG Seasons 1-3).

This event is a fundraiser for the construction of the Austin Planetarium.

WHEN: May 8th, 8pm

WHERE: BOB BULLOCK: Texas State History Museum / IMAX Theater *On the Plaza*

We Stream

October 22, 2008

Jenny Baxter

by: Jenny Baxter- AWS percussionist

I would like to start out by thanking everyone for a fabulous rehearsal. I think we are all ready to keep it up and put on a great concert on Friday.

I always love watching the video clips with the music in rehearsal because it adds so much to the experience and it’s a good sign that at the end of Amok Time during the trombone solo and the clip with Kirk and Spock, I felt the sadness in the music and the video. Our fans and Star Trek fans alike will hopefully feel the same way.

And even if you can’t make it to our concert, we’ve set up a way for anyone to watch live broadcasts of our rehearsals online. We’re now on Ustream.tv, a site that provides an experience like Twitter and You Tube (except it’s live!) combined.

The Twitter style aspect of this is that you can make a username to leave comments or “follow” us. The video shows when we’re on and off air and we will definitely be on air for our dress rehearsal on Thursday night, 7:30. So sit back and relax, you can watch us in your pajamas at home now.

“Combadge of Courage”

September 17, 2008
Patrick Phillips

Guest Blogger: Patrick Phillips

As conductor, I often have a bad habit of asking bizzare things of the orchestra, but this concert definately takes the cake…  Because we are celebrating the music of “Star Trek” I found it nessesary to ask the entire ensemble to dress as though they served on board a starship, or a strange race of alien beings for concert night… While some have went out and actually purchased their costumes… Some made their own from scratch.  One thing would be missing I knew, and I couldn’t have that, now could I?

So I asked Arvis Green, secretary of the ensemble to mold 50 Communicators from Star Trek: The Next Generation, and promised I would help her paint each one by hand… A week later she had not only molded them, but completely painted them as well!

Combadge Props Molded

Molded Combadge Props

They LOOK fantastic, and now the ensemble can be in touch with their fancy new communicator badges and the audience can rest assured knowing that the uniforms look and feel authentic.

Thanks Arvis!

Resistance is futile

Jenny Baxter

by: Jenny Baxter- AWS percussionist

We played an arrangement this week from Star Trek: First Contact, the 1996 movie and one of the few I’ve actually seen, in which Capt. Jean-Luc Picard and crew must thwart the Borgs yet another time in order to save the human race and even the crew from Borg assimilation. This movie is unique in its abundance of human interaction, and the piece we’re playing has the most emotion and “human” element of our songs.

Something Patrick said this week stood out in my mind. He said that it was amazing how many variations on the same theme we play and how different each of them are. Despite my parents’ addiction to sci-fi, I could really never get into the episodes or movies more than occasionally, but now I hum the theme waiting for my bus and I actually want to watch some of the famous episodes to know what everyone else is talking around nachos at Applebee’s. Just more proof that music makes the movies.
